A 30 m chain after measuring a distance of 6000 m was found to be 10 cm more than the designed length. If the chain was standardised before the commencement of survey then the true length is
  • a)
    6020 m
  • b)
    6010 m
  • c)
    5990 m
  • d)
    5980 m
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Measured distance = 6000 m
Error in chain = 10/100 = 0.1 m
∴ Actual or true distance = Measured distance x (1 + e/L)

= 6020 m

A 30 m chain after measuring a distance of 6000 m was found to be 10 c...
Given:
Length of chain used = 30 m
Measured distance = 6000 m
Designed length of chain = Measured length - 10 cm

To find: True length of the measured distance

Solution:

1 meter = 100 cm

Length measured with the incorrect chain = 6000 m

Length measured with the correct chain = (6000 × 100) / 30 = 20000 cm

Designed length of chain = Length measured with the correct chain - 10 cm = 19990 cm

True length of the measured distance = (19990 × 30) / 100 = 5997 m

Therefore, the true length of the measured distance is 6020 - 23 = 5997 m.

Hence, the correct option is (A) 6020 m.
