Measure of disor der of a system is noth ing but Entropy. For a spontaneous reaction, ΔG < 0. As per Gibbs Helmnoltz equation, ΔG = ΔH – TΔS
Thus ΔG is –ve only When ΔH = –ve (exothermic) and ΔS = +ve (increasing disorder)

Spontaneous reactions are those reactions that occur on their own without any external influence. The spontaneity of a reaction depends on two factors: the change in enthalpy (ΔH) and the change in entropy (ΔS).

Exothermic and increasing disorder:

An exothermic reaction releases heat energy to the surroundings. If the reaction also results in an increase in disorder or randomness, then the ΔG (change in Gibbs free energy) will be negative, indicating that the reaction is spontaneous. This is because the increase in entropy outweighs the decrease in enthalpy. Examples of such reactions include combustion reactions and dissolution reactions.

Exothermic and decreasing disorder:

If the same exothermic reaction results in a decrease in disorder, then the ΔG will be positive, indicating that the reaction is non-spontaneous. This is because the decrease in entropy outweighs the decrease in enthalpy.

Endothermic and increasing disorder:

An endothermic reaction absorbs heat energy from the surroundings. If the reaction also results in an increase in disorder, then the ΔG will be positive, indicating that the reaction is non-spontaneous. This is because the increase in entropy does not outweigh the increase in enthalpy.

Endothermic and decreasing disorder:

If the same endothermic reaction results in a decrease in disorder, then the ΔG will be negative, indicating that the reaction is spontaneous. However, such reactions are rare since endothermic reactions usually result in an increase in disorder.

Therefore, it can be concluded that an exothermic reaction that results in an increase in disorder is certain to result in a spontaneous reaction.
