Linus Pauling was an American chemist, biochemist, and peace activist who is widely considered one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century. He was born on February 28, 1901, in Portland, Oregon, and died on August 19, 1994, in Big Sur, California.
Pauling's contributions to science include his work on the nature of chemical bonds and the structure of molecules, particularly in relation to the field of quantum mechanics. He also made significant contributions to the study of proteins, and his work on the structure of DNA was an important precursor to the discovery of its double helix structure.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Pauling was also a dedicated advocate for world peace and disarmament. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his efforts in this area, becoming the only person to have received two unshared Nobel Prizes (the other being in Chemistry in 1954).
Pauling's legacy continues to be felt today, both in the field of science and in the broader social and political arenas. His work and ideas continue to inspire new generations of scientists and peace activists alike.
