Octane Rating and Gasoline

Octane rating is a measure of a fuel's ability to resist "knocking" or "pinging" during combustion, caused by the air/fuel mixture detonating spontaneously in the engine. The higher the octane rating, the more resistant the fuel is to knocking.

The octane rating of gasoline is based on two reference fuels: iso-octane (C8H18), which resists knocking, and iso-heptane (C7H16), which promotes knocking. These reference fuels are blended together to create a range of fuels with different octane ratings.

Tetraethyl Lead in Gasoline

In the past, tetraethyl lead (TEL) was commonly added to gasoline to increase its octane rating. TEL is a highly toxic compound that can cause health problems and environmental damage, and its use has been phased out in many countries.

Scavenging Agent in Gasoline

When TEL is burned in the engine, it can leave deposits on the spark plugs, which can cause knocking. To prevent this, a scavenging agent such as ethylene di-bromide (EDB) was added to gasoline to remove these lead deposits.

Surface Ignition and Knocking

Surface ignition is a type of combustion that occurs when the air/fuel mixture ignites at a hot spot on the combustion chamber wall, rather than from the spark plug. This can cause knocking, but not necessarily, as knocking can also be caused by other factors such as compression ratio, engine speed, and load.

Correct Statements

Based on the above information, the correct statements are:

- Tetraethyl lead is added to gasoline to increase octane number.
- Ethylene di-bromide is added as a scavenging agent to remove lead deposits on spark plugs.
- Surface ignition need not necessarily cause knocking.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer.
