Why mercury is in liquid phase while Zn and cd not ?
For Hg , the electronic conf is [xe]4f145d106s1. so it is inner post lanthanide element .so it has lanthanide contraction. with out it heavy element. according to the relativistic effect, the movement of electron around the nucleus is very slow. so attarction force on valance electron by the nucleus is very strong.
Due to lanthanide contraction and relativistic effect, the I.P valu of Hg is very high. so outer orbital electron can not participate the formation of metalic bond. so Hg is liquid in room temperature
