X decays after a half life to form a stable element Y ..(T is in yrs). Thus the reaction after T=20 is X = X/2+Y...(1)..so we can say ...Y= X/2....
Similarly after T= 40 ..X left is X/4 and Y formed = Y+Y/2( Y was earlier formed due to reaction 1)
So after n half lives X left is X/(2^n) = p(say) and total Y formed is Y + Y/2 + Y/4+...Y/(2^n) which is equivalent to 2Y(1-(1/2^n))= q( say) (the geometric series formula) so take p:q = 1:7 ....p/p+q = 1/8 and put Y = X/2...u will get n=3 which is 60 years
