Intensive agriculture is the practice of using large amounts of fertilizer, pesticides, and labor to increase per acre yield of the crop being grown. An example would be to plant field corn with closer plant spacing than normal, adding additional fertilizer (especially nitrogen), spraying pesticides to minimize weed competition with the corn plants, irrigating regularly, and any other effort that will result in an increase yield.
Intensive agriculture can also be used to increase meat or poultry production. Feeding chickens growth hormones, high nutrition feeds, keeping the chicken houses lit so the chickens eat continuously, and other techniques so the chickens (or other animals, this applies to beef and pork as well) will be ready for market more quickly.
Intensive agriculture isn’t a normal practice for most farmers, since the payoff doesn’t automatically increase the profit margins per acre. Growing “normal” crops at a lower production cost can still net the farmer about the same profit per acre. Farmers try to balance production costs with harvest expectations so they have a reasonable chance to make a living in their industry.
