A student performed the experiment to measure the speed of sound in air using resonance air-column method. Two resonances in the air-column were obtained by lowering the water level. The resonance with the shorter air-column is the first resonance and that with the longer air-column is the second resonance. Then,
  • a)
the intensity of the sound heard at the first resonance was more than that at the second resonance
  • b)
the prongs of the tuning fork were kept in a horizontal plane above the resonance tube
  • c)
the amplitude of vibration of the ends of the prongs is typically around 1 cm
  • d)
the length of the air-column at the first resonance was somewhat shorter than 1/4th of the wavelength of the sound in air
Correct answer is option 'A,D'. Can you explain this answer?

At second resonance the length of air column is more as compared to first resonance. Now, longer the length of air column, more is the absorption of energy and lesser is the intensity of sound heard.
As shown in the figure, the length of the air column at the first resonance is somewhat shorter than 1/4 th of the wavelength of the sound in air due to end correction.

Resonance Air-Column Method

The resonance air-column method is used to determine the speed of sound in air. In this method, a tuning fork is used to produce a sound of a known frequency, which is then allowed to travel through a column of air.

Two Resonances Obtained

When the water level is lowered, two resonances are obtained in the air-column. The resonance with the shorter air-column is the first resonance and that with the longer air-column is the second resonance.

Intensity of Sound

The intensity of the sound heard at the first resonance is more than that at the second resonance. This is because at the first resonance, the air-column is shorter and the sound waves are able to bounce back and forth more quickly, resulting in a higher intensity.

Prongs of the Tuning Fork

The prongs of the tuning fork are kept in a horizontal plane above the resonance tube. This is to ensure that the sound waves are travelling vertically through the air-column, without any interference from the prongs.

Amplitude of Vibration

The amplitude of vibration of the ends of the prongs is typically around 1 cm. This is because the vibrations need to be strong enough to produce a clear sound, but not so strong that they interfere with the motion of the air molecules.

Length of the Air-Column

The length of the air-column at the first resonance is somewhat shorter than 1/4th of the wavelength of the sound in air. This is because at the first resonance, the air-column is vibrating in its fundamental mode, which has the shortest possible wavelength.
