When burnt in air, a 12 gram mixture of carbon and sculpture yields a mixture of CO2 and SO2 in which mole of SO2 is half then that of CO2. Find the mass of carbon in a mixture?
Most Upvoted Answer
When burnt in air, a 12 gram mixture of carbon and sculpture yields a ...
Given:
- Mass of mixture = 12 grams
- Mixture contains carbon and sulfur
- On burning, mixture yields CO2 and SO2
- Mole of SO2 is half that of CO2

To find:
- Mass of carbon in the mixture

Approach:
1. Calculate the moles of CO2 and SO2 produced
2. Use the mole ratio to find the moles of carbon and sulfur in the mixture
3. Calculate the mass of carbon in the mixture using the mole of carbon

Solution:
1. Calculate the moles of CO2 and SO2 produced
- Let x be the mole of CO2 produced
- Therefore, the mole of SO2 produced = x/2 (as given)
- Total moles = x + x/2 = 3x/2
- Using the molar mass of CO2 (44 g/mol) and SO2 (64 g/mol)
- Mass of CO2 produced = 44x grams
- Mass of SO2 produced = 32x grams

2. Use the mole ratio to find the moles of carbon and sulfur in the mixture
- Let y be the mole of carbon in the mixture
- Therefore, the mole of sulfur in the mixture = y/3 (as the mole ratio of carbon to sulfur is 3:1)
- Total moles = y + y/3 = 4y/3
- Using the molar mass of carbon (12 g/mol) and sulfur (32 g/mol)
- Mass of carbon in the mixture = 12y grams
- Mass of sulfur in the mixture = 32y/3 grams

3. Calculate the mass of carbon in the mixture using the mole of carbon
- Mass of carbon + Mass of sulfur = Mass of mixture = 12 grams
- 12y + 32y/3 = 12
- 36y + 32y = 36 * 3
- 68y = 108
- y = 1.59 moles (approx)
- Mass of carbon in the mixture = 12y = 12 * 1.59 = 19.08 grams (approx)

Answer: The mass of carbon in the mixture is approximately 19.08 grams.

When burnt in air, a 12 gram mixture of carbon and sculpture yields a ...
Let the mass of C be x gram
Mass of S be (12-x) gram
Mass of mixture is 12 gram
According to the question ,
 1/2 n mole of C = n moles of S
1/2 *x/12 = (12-x)/32
4x = 36 - 3x
7x = 36
x = 5.14 gram
Mass of C is 5.14 gram
