Positive Deviation in Solutions

Positive deviation is observed when the actual vapour pressure of a solution is greater than the expected vapour pressure. It occurs when the intermolecular forces between the solute and the solvent are weaker than the intermolecular forces between the solute-solute and solvent-solvent molecules. This results in the molecules escaping from the surface more easily, leading to an increased vapour pressure.

Examples of Positive Deviation

Out of the given options, option C (Acetone and carbon disulphide) shows positive deviation. The other options exhibit negative deviation.

Explanation

Acetone and carbon disulphide have similar molecular structures with similar intermolecular forces. However, they have different polarities. Acetone is a polar molecule due to the presence of a carbonyl group, while carbon disulphide is a non-polar molecule. When mixed together, the polar and non-polar molecules do not interact strongly with each other, resulting in a positive deviation from Raoult's law.

Implications

Positive deviation is important in the manufacture of certain products such as perfumes, where the volatility of the components is important. It is also used in the separation of different components in the chemical industry.
