When methanol is heated with I2/NaOH, it undergoes the iodoform reaction to form a yellow precipitate of iodoform. Ethanol, on the other hand, does not give a positive iodoform test.

Treatment with acidic KMnO4:
Methanol is oxidized by acidic KMnO4 to form methanoic acid, which is further oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. Ethanol, on the other hand, is oxidized to ethanoic acid and then to carbon dioxide and water.

So, by using these two tests, methanol and ethanol can be distinguished based on their chemical reactivity and the products formed during the reactions.
