Sodium carbonate (washing soda) to the water. When sodium carbonate is added to hard water containing calcium carbonate, it reacts with the calcium ions to form insoluble calcium carbonate which can then be removed by filtration or settling. The chemical equation for this reaction is:

Na2CO3 + CaCO3 → 2NaCO3 + CaCO3

The resulting sodium carbonate can also be removed by boiling the water, which causes the sodium carbonate to decompose into sodium oxide and carbon dioxide, leaving behind soft water. The chemical equation for this reaction is:

2Na2CO3 → 4Na + 2CO2 + O2
