Decrease in temperature, in general, results in:

To understand the effect of temperature on viscosity, it is important to first understand what viscosity is. Viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. It is influenced by various factors, including temperature.

Effect of temperature on the viscosity of liquids:

When the temperature of a liquid decreases, the viscosity generally increases. This can be attributed to the fact that at lower temperatures, the kinetic energy of the liquid molecules decreases, causing them to move more slowly and interact more strongly with each other. As a result, the intermolecular forces in the liquid become more significant, leading to an increase in viscosity.

Effect of temperature on the viscosity of gases:

On the other hand, when the temperature of a gas decreases, the viscosity generally decreases. This can be explained by the kinetic theory of gases. According to this theory, gases consist of rapidly moving molecules that are relatively far apart and have weak intermolecular forces. When the temperature decreases, the kinetic energy of the gas molecules also decreases, causing them to move more slowly and collide less frequently. As a result, the gas molecules experience fewer intermolecular interactions and exhibit lower viscosity.

Overall effect of temperature on viscosity:

Based on the above explanations, it can be concluded that a decrease in temperature generally leads to an increase in the viscosity of liquids and a decrease in the viscosity of gases. This can be summarized as follows:

- Decrease in temperature -> Increase in the viscosity of liquids
- Decrease in temperature -> Decrease in the viscosity of gases

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'C': An increase in the viscosity of liquids and a decrease in that of gases.
