Type of Vascular Tissue
Vascular tissue is a type of complex permanent tissue that is responsible for the transport of water, minerals, and food materials in plants. It is composed of two types of tissues: xylem and phloem.
Xylem Tissue
Xylem tissue is responsible for the transport of water and minerals from the roots to the leaves. It is composed of four types of cells:
- Tracheids: These are elongated cells with tapered ends. They are found in gymnosperms and angiosperms.
- Vessel elements: These are short and wide cells that are joined end-to-end to form vessels. They are found in angiosperms.
- Fibers: These are long and narrow cells that provide mechanical support to the plant.
- Parenchyma cells: These are thin-walled cells that store food and water.
Phloem Tissue
Phloem tissue is responsible for the transport of food materials from the leaves to the rest of the plant. It is composed of four types of cells:
- Sieve tube elements: These are elongated cells that are joined end-to-end to form sieve tubes. They have perforated walls called sieve plates that allow the flow of food materials.
- Companion cells: These are specialized cells that are closely associated with sieve tube elements. They provide metabolic support to the sieve tube elements.
- Fibers: These are long and narrow cells that provide mechanical support to the plant.
- Parenchyma cells: These are thin-walled cells that store food and water.
Function of Vascular Tissue
Vascular tissue is responsible for the transport of water, minerals, and food materials in plants. The xylem tissue transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves, while the phloem tissue transports food materials from the leaves to the rest of the plant. Without vascular tissue, plants would not be able to survive.

Vascular tissue system consist of complex tissue like xylem and pholeom . The xylem and pholeom together consist of vascular bundles . In dicotyledonous stem , cambium are present between xylem and pholeom. such vascular bundles because of presence cambium possess the ability to form secondary xylem and pholeom tissue . hence it is called open vascular bundles . In the monocotyledons the vascular bundles have no cambium present in them. hence since they do not form secondary tissue hence it is called closed vascular bundles.
