Comprehension Type
Direction (Q. Nos. 16 and 17) This section contains a paragraph, describing theory, experiments, data, etc. Two questions related to the paragraph have been given. Each question has only one correct answer among the four given options (a), (b), (c) and (d).
Passage
The chief ore of zinc is ZnS.The ore is purified by floatation process and then heated in air which converts ZnS into ZnO. ZnO can be reduced with coke in Belgian process to get zinc which is purified by electrolysis.
Alternately zinc can be extracted from calamine .This after purification by levigation, subjected to calcination to get oxide. This on reduction by Belgian method followed by electrolytic refining yields pure zinc.
Q.
Zinc oxide is converted into zinc by
  • a)
    reduction with carbon
  • b)
    reduction with CO
  • c)
    heating to high temperature
  • d)
    Any one of them
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Zinc oxide is converted into zinc by reduction with carbon.

Explanation:
Zinc oxide (ZnO) can be converted into zinc (Zn) through the process of reduction with carbon. This process is also known as the carbon reduction method and is commonly used in the production of zinc.

1. Reduction with carbon:
- In this process, zinc oxide is heated with carbon (in the form of coke) in a furnace.
- The carbon reacts with the oxygen in the zinc oxide, resulting in the production of carbon dioxide (CO2) and zinc.
- The chemical equation for this reaction is as follows:
ZnO + C → Zn + CO2

2. Role of carbon:
- Carbon acts as a reducing agent in this process.
- A reducing agent is a substance that donates electrons or removes oxygen from another substance, causing it to undergo reduction.
- In the case of zinc oxide, carbon donates electrons to the oxygen atoms in the compound, resulting in the formation of carbon dioxide and elemental zinc.

3. Importance of carbon monoxide (CO):
- Although carbon dioxide (CO2) is formed during the reduction process, carbon monoxide (CO) is also produced.
- Carbon monoxide has a higher affinity for oxygen than carbon dioxide.
- The carbon monoxide gas present in the furnace reacts with any excess carbon dioxide, converting it back into carbon monoxide.
- This is important because carbon monoxide is a better reducing agent than carbon dioxide.
- The overall reaction can be represented as:
2ZnO + C → 2Zn + CO2
CO2 + C → 2CO

4. Significance of the Belgian process:
- The Belgian process mentioned in the passage refers to the method of zinc production that involves the reduction of zinc oxide with carbon.
- This process is widely used due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- It allows for the extraction of pure zinc from its ore, making it suitable for various industrial applications.

In conclusion, zinc oxide is converted into zinc through the process of reduction with carbon. This process involves heating zinc oxide with carbon (in the form of coke) in a furnace, resulting in the formation of zinc and carbon dioxide. The carbon acts as a reducing agent, donating electrons to the oxygen atoms in the zinc oxide. The Belgian process utilizes this method of reduction to extract pure zinc from its ore.
