A reversible heat engine operates between 600° C and 40° C. ...
Given:
Temperature at hot reservoir (Th) = 600°C
Temperature at cold reservoir (Tc) = 18°C
Heat received by engine (Qh) = 2100 kJ
Net work output (W) = 3270 kJ

To find:
Cooling effect of refrigerator (Qc)

Concept:
Carnot engine efficiency:
η = 1 - Tc/Th

Coefficient of performance (COP) of Carnot refrigerator:
COP = Th/(Th - Tc)

Qh = W + Qc

Calculation:
Efficiency of Carnot engine:
η = 1 - Tc/Th = 1 - (291/873) = 0.6667

Heat rejected by engine to the cold reservoir:
Qc = Qh - W = 2100 - 3270 = -1170 kJ

Here, negative sign indicates that heat is rejected by the refrigerator instead of absorbing it.

COP of Carnot refrigerator:
COP = Th/(Th - Tc) = 873/(873 - 291) = 3

Cooling effect of refrigerator:
Qc = COP × W = 3 × 3270 = 9810 kJ

Therefore, the cooling effect of the refrigerator is 4296 kJ.
