Formation of Potassium Manganate (K2MnO4)

Potassium manganate (K2MnO4) is a purple-colored compound that is formed by the reaction of manganese dioxide with potassium hydroxide in air. It can also be formed by the reaction of formaldehyde with potassium permanganate in the presence of a strong alkali.

Reaction 1: Manganese dioxide is fused with potassium hydroxide in air

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) are fused together in air to produce potassium manganate (K2MnO4).

2MnO2 + 4KOH + O2 → 2K2MnO4 + 2H2O

This reaction takes place due to the oxidation of MnO2 to MnO4^2- by the oxygen present in air.

Reaction 2: Formaldehyde reacts with potassium permanganate in the presence of a strong alkali

In this reaction, formaldehyde (HCHO) reacts with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) in the presence of a strong alkali like sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH) to produce potassium manganate (K2MnO4).

HCHO + KMnO4 + 2KOH → K2MnO4 + H2O + KO2

This reaction takes place due to the oxidation of formaldehyde to formic acid (HCOOH) and then to carbon dioxide (CO2) by KMnO4.

Conclusion

Potassium manganate (K2MnO4) is formed by the reaction of manganese dioxide with potassium hydroxide in air and by the reaction of formaldehyde with potassium permanganate in the presence of a strong alkali. These reactions take place due to the oxidation of the reactants by the oxidizing agents present in the reactions.
