For the estimation of nitrogen, 1.4 g of an organic compound was digested by Kjeldahl method and the evolved ammonia was absorbed in 60 mL of M/10 sulphuric acid. The unreacted acid required 20 mL of M/10 sodium hydroxide for completeneutralization. The percentage of nitrogen in the compound is:
  • a)
    6%
  • b)
    10%
  • c)
    3%
  • d)
    5%
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

For the estimation of nitrogen, 1.4 g of an organic compound was diges...
According to Kjeldahl method, it has three steps:
1. Digestion
2. Neutralization
3. Titration
Estimation of nitrogen
Percentage of N=1.4NV / W
wt. of organic compound = 1.4 g
Ammonia = Meq of sulphuric acid
Sulphuric acid = 15 x 60= 12 Meq
Meq of sulphuric acid when reacts with sodium hydroxide = 20x110=2 Meq
Sulphuric acid against ammonia = 12.2= 10
or
Percentage of Nitrogen = 1.4 x 101.4 = 10%

For the estimation of nitrogen, 1.4 g of an organic compound was diges...
Given data:
- Mass of organic compound = 1.4 g
- Volume of M/10 sulphuric acid used = 60 mL
- Volume of M/10 sodium hydroxide used for neutralization = 20 mL

Calculations:
1. The amount of ammonia evolved can be calculated using the volume of acid used:
- 1 mL of M/10 sulfuric acid reacts with 1/5 g of nitrogen
- So, 60 mL of M/10 sulfuric acid will react with (60/5) = 12 g of nitrogen
- Since 1.4 g of organic compound contains nitrogen, the percentage of nitrogen in the compound is (1.4/12) x 100 = 11.67%
2. The unreacted acid after the reaction with nitrogen can be calculated:
- 60 mL - 20 mL = 40 mL of acid reacted with nitrogen
- 20 mL of M/10 sodium hydroxide neutralizes 40 mL of M/10 sulfuric acid
- This means 1 mL of M/10 sulfuric acid corresponds to 0.5 mL of M/10 sodium hydroxide
- The unreacted acid is 20 mL, which corresponds to 10 mL of M/10 sodium hydroxide
- This 10 mL of sodium hydroxide corresponds to 1/2 g of nitrogen
- So, the original 1.4 g of organic compound contains (1/2) x (1.4/10) x 100 = 7% nitrogen
Therefore, the percentage of nitrogen in the compound is approximately 10%, which corresponds to option B.
