A paper on ‘NASA Twins’ has revealed that spaceflight has an effect on the gut microbiome; the effects however appear to be significant and temporary. The research findings have been published in the journal named ‘Science’ in which results from 10 other research teams are there that examined the nature of the human body’s response to spaceflight. The twins involved in the study were 2 fifty-year old astronauts (at the time of the study): Scott Kelly ( he flew a 1-year mission aboard the International Space Station which ended in March 2016) and his twin brother, Mark Kelly who stayed on Earth while his brother was in orbit.Stefan Green was the 1st author of the research study managed the genetic sequencing and analysis of the gut microbes.
