Which of the following statements are incorrect about Ramachandran plo...
Option (a) is incorrect
Ramachandran plot is a plot of the torsional angles -phi  and psi  of the amino acid residues present in a peptide. It depicts the torsional angles between the alpha-carbon and peptide carbon (psi) and alpha carbon and peptide nitrogen (phi).
Option (b) is correct and option (d) is incorrect
Since glycine has only a hydrogen as a side chain, steric hindrance is not as likely to occur as  and  are rotated through a series of values. That is why Ramachandran plot has a relatively larger allowed area of glycine compared to other amino acids.
Option (c) is correct
Ramachandran plot can be used in theory to show which values or conformations of  and  angles are possible for an amino acid residue in a protein.

Which of the following statements are incorrect about Ramachandran plo...
Incorrect Statements about Ramachandran Plot:

A) Ramachandran plot depicts the torsional angles between the side chain and peptide bond.

The statement is incorrect. The Ramachandran plot depicts the torsional angles (phi and psi) between the peptide bond and the backbone atoms (N, Cα, C). It does not consider the side chain torsional angles. The phi angle represents the rotation around the Cα-N bond, while the psi angle represents the rotation around the Cα-C bond. The plot provides information about the allowed and disallowed regions of these angles in a protein structure.

D) Ramachandran plot for glycine is much restricted compared to other amino acids.

The statement is incorrect. The Ramachandran plot shows the allowed and disallowed regions for different amino acids. Glycine, which is the simplest amino acid, has higher conformational flexibility due to its small side chain (only a hydrogen atom). Therefore, glycine has a relatively larger allowed area in the Ramachandran plot compared to other amino acids. The smaller side chains of glycine allow it to adopt a wider range of torsional angles without steric clashes.

Correct Statements about Ramachandran Plot:

B) Ramachandran plot has a relatively larger allowed area for glycine compared to other amino acids.

The statement is correct. As mentioned earlier, glycine has a relatively larger allowed area in the Ramachandran plot compared to other amino acids. This is because glycine lacks a side chain or R-group and only has a hydrogen atom as its side chain. The absence of a bulky side chain allows glycine to adopt a wider range of torsional angles without steric clashes.

C) Ramachandran plot can be used to predict the stability of a newly modelled peptide structure.

The statement is correct. The Ramachandran plot provides valuable information about the allowed and disallowed regions of phi and psi angles in a protein structure. It helps in evaluating the sterically allowed conformations of the peptide backbone. By comparing the torsional angles of a newly modelled peptide structure with the Ramachandran plot, one can assess its conformational stability. Torsional angles falling within the allowed regions of the plot indicate a more stable structure, while angles in the disallowed regions suggest potential steric clashes and instability.
