Separation of DNA fragments according to their size

Principle of gel electrophoresis
When the electric field is applied, the DNA fragments move through the gel at different rates based on their sizes. Smaller fragments move faster and travel further through the gel, while larger fragments move slower and remain closer to the wells. This separation is due to the fact that DNA is negatively charged and is attracted to the positive electrode.
Visualization of DNA fragments
After the electrophoresis is complete, the DNA fragments can be visualized by staining the gel with a fluorescent dye such as ethidium bromide and exposing it to UV light. This allows researchers to see the distinct bands representing different DNA fragments.
Applications of gel electrophoresis
