  • Stalactites: It is a type of rock formation produced by the precipitation of minerals from water dripping through the cave ceiling. It hangs from the ceiling of a cave.
  • Stalagmites: It is a type of rock formation that rises from the floor of a cave due to the accumulation of material deposited on the floor from ceiling drippings.

Stalactites and stalagmites are formation of mineral deposits that form inside a cave. Stalactites are the formations which hang from the ceiling whereas stalagmites are those which rise from the floor of a cave. The caves in which these formations occur are called 'KARST' which are basically the topography that is formed because of dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite or gypsum. In these caves of limestone, usually calcite or calcium carbonate (CaCO3) reacts with incoming rainwater and carbon-dioxide to form these structures. Hence option (C) is the correct answer.

Stalactites and stalagmites are features of:a)Glacial topographyb)Volc...
Explanation:

Stalactites and stalagmites are geological formations that are found in caves and are commonly associated with karst topography.

Karst topography:
Karst topography is characterized by the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is formed when water erodes and dissolves the rocks, creating a variety of unique landforms such as sinkholes, caves, underground rivers, and springs.

Formation of stalactites and stalagmites:
Stalactites and stalagmites are formed through the process of deposition of mineral-rich water. This process occurs in caves where water containing dissolved minerals drips from the ceiling. Over time, the minerals in the water accumulate and harden, forming elongated structures that hang from the ceiling, known as stalactites. The water that drips onto the floor of the cave also contains minerals and forms upward-growing structures, known as stalagmites. Over time, stalactites and stalagmites can grow towards each other and eventually join, forming columns.

Features of stalactites:
- Hang from the ceiling of a cave
- Have a cylindrical or conical shape
- Formed by the deposition of calcium carbonate or other minerals
- Drip water containing dissolved minerals
- Can vary in size and length

Features of stalagmites:
- Grow from the floor of a cave
- Have a cylindrical or conical shape
- Formed by the deposition of calcium carbonate or other minerals
- Receive water drips from stalactites or groundwater
- Can vary in size and height

Importance of stalactites and stalagmites:
Stalactites and stalagmites provide valuable information about the history and formation of caves and the geological processes that have shaped the Earth's surface. They also contribute to the overall beauty and aesthetic appeal of caves, attracting visitors and tourists. Additionally, they serve as important habitats for various species of cave-dwelling organisms.

In conclusion, stalactites and stalagmites are unique features of karst topography. They are formed through the deposition of mineral-rich water in caves and provide valuable insights into the geological processes that shape our planet.
