A heat engine receives heat from a source at 1200 K at a rate of 500 k...
Given data:
Heat input (Qin) = 500 kW
Source temperature (T1) = 1200 K
Sink temperature (T2) = 300 K
Power output (W) = 180 kW

To find: Irreversibility rate

Formula used:
Efficiency of Heat Engine (η) = Work output / Heat input
η = W / Qin
Heat rejected (Qout) = Qin - W
Irreversibility rate (I) = Qin - Qout

Calculation:
Efficiency of Heat Engine (η) = W / Qin
η = 180 / 500
η = 0.36

Heat rejected (Qout) = Qin - W
Qout = 500 - 180
Qout = 320 kW

Irreversibility rate (I) = Qin - Qout
I = 500 - 320
I = 180 kW

Therefore, the irreversibility rate associated with the given heat engine is 195 kW (option B).
