Low temperature and high pressure are required to liquefy gases to liquids. There is a lot of space between the particles of a gas. On applying high pressure, the particles of gas move get so close that they start attracting each other sufficiently forming a liquid. When gas is compressed too much, heat is produced, so it is necessary to cool it. Cooling lowers the temperature of compressed gas and helps in liquefying it. Hence, a gas can be liquefied by applying high pressure and lowering the temperature (cooling).

Conditions for Liquefaction of Natural Gas

The correct set of conditions for liquefaction of natural gas is low temperature and high pressure. Let's understand why this is the case:

Low Temperature:
When natural gas is compressed, its molecules move closer together and the temperature increases. According to the Gas Laws, when the volume of a gas is kept constant, the pressure and temperature of the gas are directly proportional. Hence, when the gas is compressed, the temperature also increases. However, if we cool the gas, the molecules will move slower and will require less space, thereby reducing the pressure. So, to liquefy natural gas, we need to cool it down to a low temperature.

High Pressure:
When the pressure of a gas is increased, the space between its molecules is reduced. This increases the intermolecular forces between the gas molecules, bringing them closer to each other. At a certain point, the intermolecular forces become strong enough to hold the molecules in a fixed position, causing the gas to change into a liquid. This phenomenon is called liquefaction. To achieve liquefaction of natural gas, we need to compress it to a high pressure.

Hence, the correct conditions for liquefaction of natural gas are low temperature and high pressure.
