Calculation of Length of Parallel Fillet Welds

Given Data:

  • Size of fillet: 5 mm

  • Allowable shear load per mm: 300 N

Approach:

The shear load capacity of a fillet weld depends on the length of the weld. Therefore, to find the length of the parallel fillet weld, we need to calculate the shear load capacity of the transverse fillet weld and then divide the total shear load by the allowable shear load per mm. This will give us the required length of the parallel fillet weld.

Calculation:

Let's assume the length of each parallel fillet weld to be 'l'.

The total shear load capacity of the transverse fillet weld can be calculated as:

Shear load capacity of transverse fillet weld = size of fillet x length of transverse fillet weld x allowable shear load per mm

Shear load capacity of transverse fillet weld = 5 x l x 300 = 1500l N

The total shear load on the two parallel fillet welds is equal to the shear load capacity of the transverse fillet weld. Therefore,

2 x Shear load capacity of each parallel fillet weld = Shear load capacity of transverse fillet weld

2 x (size of fillet x length of each parallel fillet weld x allowable shear load per mm) = Shear load capacity of transverse fillet weld

2 x (5 x l x 300) = 1500l

3000l = 1500l

l = 0.5 m

Answer:

The length of each parallel fillet weld is 0.5 m or 500 mm.
