Buoyancy:

Buoyancy is the upward force exerted by a fluid on an immersed object. It is also known as Archimedes’ principle named after the Greek mathematician Archimedes. The principle states that every object when immersed wholly or partially in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

Explanation:

When an object is immersed in a fluid, it experiences a force in the upward direction which is opposite to the weight of the object. This force is called buoyant force or buoyancy. The buoyant force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. If the weight of the object is less than the weight of the fluid displaced, then the object will float on the surface of the fluid. If the weight of the object is more than the weight of the fluid displaced, then the object will sink in the fluid.

Example:

A ship floats on the water because the weight of the water displaced by the ship is equal to the weight of the ship. Similarly, a balloon filled with helium gas rises in the air because the weight of the helium gas displaced by the balloon is greater than the weight of the balloon.

Buoyancy is an important concept in fluid mechanics and is used in many engineering applications. It is used in designing ships, submarines, hot air balloons, and many other structures that are immersed in fluids.
