Lord Dalhousie (George Ramsay) was a British nobleman and colonial administrator who served as the Governor General of India from 1848 to 1856. He was known for his administrative and economic reforms, including the introduction of the telegraph system, the construction of railways and canals, and the annexation of Punjab and Oudh. However, his policies also led to the Indian Rebellion of 1857, as he introduced the Doctrine of Lapse, which allowed the British to seize the territories of Indian princes who had no natural heirs. Lord Dalhousie also reorganized the administration of India, established a modern system of taxation, and promoted education and public works. He was criticized for his aggressive policies towards Indian rulers, but he is also credited with laying the foundations for modern India.
