Gravity does cause things to fall with increasing speed, but as they speed up viscous force due to air increases. Eventually the viscous force due to air is enough to balance the force of gravity, so the acceleration stops and the raindrop reaches a constant terminal velocity. So correct choice is A. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.

Assertion: A falling ball is attracted by the earth, because of which velocity of the ball goes on increasing in the downward direction. The ball also attracts the earth with same force but velocity developed in earth is negligible.

Reason: Momentum of ball and earth system is conserved.

The correct answer for this question is option 'B': Both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

Explanation:

Assertion: A falling ball is attracted by the earth, because of which velocity of the ball goes on increasing in the downward direction. The ball also attracts the earth with same force but velocity developed in earth is negligible.

When a ball is falling towards the earth, it is attracted by the gravitational force exerted by the earth. This force causes the ball to accelerate in the downward direction. As the ball falls, its velocity increases due to the constant acceleration. This is consistent with the laws of motion and gravity, where objects with mass attract each other.

The ball also exerts a gravitational force on the earth. According to Newton's third law of motion, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. So, the ball attracts the earth with the same force that the earth attracts the ball. However, due to the large mass of the earth compared to the ball, the acceleration and resulting velocity of the earth is negligible. Therefore, the velocity developed in the earth is negligible compared to the velocity developed in the falling ball.

Reason: Momentum of ball and earth system is conserved.

The law of conservation of momentum states that the total momentum of an isolated system remains constant if no external forces act on it. In this case, the falling ball and the earth can be considered as an isolated system.

As the ball falls towards the earth, its momentum increases in the downward direction. At the same time, the earth exerts an equal and opposite force on the ball, causing its momentum to decrease in the upward direction. However, the mass of the earth is so large compared to the ball that the change in its velocity is negligible.

Therefore, while the momentum of the ball and earth system is conserved, the reason given does not provide a correct explanation for the assertion. The assertion is true because the ball is attracted by the earth and its velocity increases in the downward direction, but the reason given does not explain why the velocity developed in the earth is negligible.
