Volumetric estimation of Cu2+ is carried out iodometrically as follows:
2 Cu2+ + 4 Kl = 2 Cul2 + 4K+
2 Cul2 = 2 Cul + l2
This liberated l2 is titrated against Na2S2O3 solution
2Na2S2O3 + l2 = Na2S4O6 + 2 Nal
2 moles Cu2+ ions ≡ 1 mole l2 ≡ 2 moles of Na2S2O3
∴ 1 mole Cu2+ ion ≡ 1 mole Na2S2O3
Eq. wt. of Na2S2O3 = mol. wt
∴ 1 mole Cu2+ ion ≡ 1 Eq. wt. of Na2S2O3

Calculating the Number of Equivalents of Na2S2O3
To determine the number of equivalents of Na2S2O3 required for the volumetric estimation of one equivalent of Cu2+, we need to consider the chemical reaction between Na2S2O3 and Cu2+.

Chemical Reaction:
Cu2+ + 2Na2S2O3 → CuS2O3 + 2Na+ + Na2S4O6

Stoichiometry:
From the balanced equation, we can see that 1 equivalent of Cu2+ reacts with 2 equivalents of Na2S2O3.

Therefore, the number of equivalents of Na2S2O3 required for the estimation of 1 equivalent of Cu2+ is 1.
This means that for every equivalent of Cu2+ present in the solution, only 1 equivalent of Na2S2O3 is needed to complete the reaction and reach the endpoint in the titration process.
