The solubility product expression for silver(I) sulphide, using x to r...
The correct answer is Option C.
The ionization equilibrium of silver (I) sulfide is
Ag2S⇌2Ag+ +S2
The solubility product expression for silver (I) sulfide is KSP[Ag+]2 [S2].
But [Ag+]2 = x and [S2−] = y.
Hence the expression for the solubility product becomes KSP[Ag+]2 [S2−] = x2y.

Solubility product expression for silver(I) sulphide

The solubility product expression for silver(I) sulphide is given by:

Ag2S ⇌ 2Ag+ + S2-

Ksp = [Ag+]2 [S2-]

where Ksp is the solubility product constant.

Formulation of solubility product expression

Using x to represent the molar concentration of silver(I) and y to represent the molar concentration of sulphide, the solubility product expression can be formulated as:

Ag2S ⇌ 2Ag+ + S2-

Ksp = [Ag+]2 [S2-]

[Ag+] = 2x (since 2 moles of Ag+ are formed for every mole of Ag2S)

[S2-] = y (since 1 mole of S2- is formed for every mole of Ag2S)

Substituting the values of [Ag+] and [S2-] in the solubility product expression, we get:

Ksp = (2x)2 y

Simplifying the expression, we get:

Ksp = 4x2y

Therefore, the correct option is C) x2y.
