Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic Cells

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are the two basic types of cells that make up all living organisms. However, there are significant structural and functional differences between the two types of cells.

Prokaryotic Cells

  • Prokaryotic cells are smaller in size, typically measuring between 0.1 and 5 micrometers in diameter.

  • They lack a true nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Instead, their genetic material is located in the cytoplasm in the form of a single, circular chromosome.

  • Prokaryotic cells also have smaller ribosomes and lack a cytoskeleton.

  • They are found in bacteria and archaea.

Eukaryotic Cells

  • Eukaryotic cells are larger in size, typically measuring between 10 and 100 micrometers in diameter.

  • They have a true nucleus, which contains the genetic material in the form of linear chromosomes. They also have other membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus.

  • Eukaryotic cells have larger ribosomes and a cytoskeleton for support and movement.

  • They are found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists.

Key Differences

  • Eukaryotic cells are larger and more complex than prokaryotic cells.

  • Eukaryotic cells have a true nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles, while prokaryotic cells lack these structures.

  • Eukaryotic cells have larger ribosomes and a cytoskeleton, while prokaryotic cells have smaller ribosomes and lack a cytoskeleton.

  • Prokaryotic cells are found in bacteria and archaea, while eukaryotic cells are found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists.

Overall, these differences in structure and function allow eukaryotic cells to carry out more complex processes such as multicellular organization, specialized functions, and communication between cells.
