Under what condition(s) is the magnitude of average velocity of an object equal to its average speed?

Condition for the Magnitude of Average Velocity of an Object to be Equal to its Average Speed

  • Uniform Motion in a Straight Line: When an object moves with uniform velocity in a straight line, the magnitude of its average velocity and average speed will be the same. This is because the object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time.

  • Non-Uniform Motion: When an object moves with non-uniform velocity, the magnitude of its average velocity and average speed will not be the same. This is because the object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time.

  • Instantaneous Velocity: In general, the magnitude of average velocity and average speed of an object are not equal. However, if the object moves with a constant speed, its instantaneous velocity will be equal to its speed at any given instant. Hence, the magnitude of average velocity and average speed will be the same in this case.

Explanation

Average velocity is the displacement of an object per unit time. It is a vector quantity and is defined as the change in position divided by the time taken. On the other hand, average speed is the total distance travelled by an object per unit time. It is a scalar quantity and is defined as the total distance travelled divided by the time taken.

When an object moves with uniform velocity in a straight line, its displacement is equal to the distance travelled. Therefore, the magnitude of its average velocity and average speed will be the same. However, when an object moves with non-uniform velocity, its displacement will not be equal to the distance travelled. Hence, the magnitude of its average velocity and average speed will not be the same.

In general, the magnitude of average velocity and average speed of an object are not equal. However, if the object moves with a constant speed, its instantaneous velocity will be equal to its speed at any given instant. Hence, the magnitude of average velocity and average speed will be the same in this case.
