Organic chemistry is an interesting subject. At first, you think to yourself: 'O.K., I have these reactions and I can memorize them. No problem." In fact, that is the easiest way to start out studying organic chemistry. However, as the class proceeds you get more and more reactions and the array of reagents gets bigger and bigger, at some point you start forgetting the earlier reactions, or getting them confused with later reactions. This is, as we say, not good.The better way to study organic chemistry is to look at the reaction mechanisms. Always look at where the electrons go and why they go there. Nucleophilic attack on a carbonyl carbon? Of course! It goes to the carbon because of the carbon-oxygen dipole that leaves the carbon slightly positive! Electrophilic attack on a primary alkene? Two options, but which cation, primary or secondary, is more stable?Always understand the reaction mechanisms! In the beginning you will be at a slight disadvantage versus your classmates who simply memorize and move on, but in the long run, when your classmates are frantically trying to keep all the reactions straight in their heads you will be saying to yourself: "Of course.
