Endocytosis

Endocytosis is the process by which cells take in substances from outside the cell by engulfing them into a vesicle formed by the plasma membrane. The vesicle then moves into the cytoplasm and merges with other organelles to process the ingested material. There are two types of endocytosis:

1. Phagocytosis - This process is used by cells to engulf large solid particles such as bacteria, dead cells, and other debris. The particle is surrounded by a membrane, forming a phagosome that merges with lysosomes to break down the contents.

2. Pinocytosis - This process is used to engulf small dissolved particles such as ions and molecules, by creating small vesicles around them. This process is also known as 'cell drinking.'

Plasmolysis

Plasmolysis is the process by which plant cells lose water and shrink away from their cell walls. This happens when a plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, where the concentration of solutes outside the cell is higher than inside the cell. The cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall, leading to the loss of turgor pressure and the eventual shrinking of the cell.

The process of plasmolysis can be divided into three stages:

1. Incipient plasmolysis - The initial stage where the cell membrane begins to separate from the cell wall.

2. Continued plasmolysis - The stage where the membrane has pulled away from the wall, and the cell has shrunk.

3. Complete plasmolysis - The stage where the cell membrane has completely pulled away from the cell wall, and the cell has collapsed.

Plasmolysis can be reversed by placing the plant cell in a hypotonic solution, where the concentration of solutes outside the cell is lower than inside the cell. This causes water to move into the cell, restoring its original size and shape.
