Meiotic Division in Male Germ Cells

The meiotic division in male germ cells can be divided into two stages:

1. Meiosis I: In this stage, the primary spermatocytes undergo homologous recombination and then separate into two daughter cells called secondary spermatocytes.

2. Meiosis II: In this stage, the secondary spermatocytes undergo separation of sister chromatids to form four haploid daughter cells called spermatids.

Differentiation of Spermatids into Spermatozoa

After the meiotic division, the spermatids undergo a process called spermiogenesis, which involves the differentiation of the spermatids into spermatozoa (mature sperm cells). This process includes the following changes:

1. Formation of acrosome: The spermatids develop an acrosome, which is a cap-like structure that contains enzymes needed for fertilization.

2. Development of flagellum: The spermatids develop a tail-like structure called a flagellum, which enables them to swim towards the egg cell.

3. Reduction of cytoplasm: The spermatids reduce their cytoplasmic volume, which allows them to become more streamlined and efficient for movement.

4. Condensation of nucleus: The spermatids condense their nucleus so that it contains only half the genetic material of the original cell.

5. Formation of mature spermatozoa: Finally, the spermatids mature into spermatozoa, which are released into the epididymis and then into the vas deferens during ejaculation.

During meiosis-I, primary spermatocyte is the main germ cell. It is diploid, (2n) with 44 + XY (total 46) chromosomes. It completes the first meiotic division (reduction division) leading to the formation of two equal, haploid cells called secondary spermatocytes, which have only 23 chromosomes each i.e. 22 + X or 22+ Y. So, at the end of first meiotic division, male germ cell differentiates into secondary spermatocyte.
