Three cars A, B and C started from a point at 5 pm, 6 pm and 7 pm respectively and travelled at uniform speeds of 60 km/hr, 80 km/hr and x km/hr respectively in the same direction. If all the three met at another point at the same instant during their journey, then what is the value of x?
  • a)
    120
  • b)
    110
  • c)
    105
  • d)
    100
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Three cars A, B and C started from a point at 5 pm, 6 pm and 7 pm resp...
Distance covered by A till 6pm = 60 km
Distance covered by A till 7 pm = 120 km
Time taken by B to catch A = 60/(80-60 ) = 3 hrs
So A and B will meet at 6pm + 3 hrs = 9pm
Since we know that all three met at the same time
The time taken by C to cover 120 km difference will be  = 9pm – 7pm = 2hrs
Therefore, (x – 60 )*2 = 120
x = 120 km/hr

Problem:
Three cars A, B and C started from a point at 5 pm, 6 pm and 7 pm respectively and travelled at uniform speeds of 60 km/hr, 80 km/hr and x km/hr respectively in the same direction. If all the three met at another point at the same instant during their journey, then what is the value of x?

Solution:
Let the distance travelled by car C be d km. Then, the distance travelled by car B is (d + 80) km and the distance travelled by car A is (d + 140) km.

The time taken by car C to travel d km is d/x hours. Similarly, the time taken by car B to travel (d + 80) km is (d + 80)/80 hours and the time taken by car A to travel (d + 140) km is (d + 140)/60 hours.

Since all the three cars met at the same instant, the time taken by all the three cars must be equal. Therefore, we have:

d/x = (d + 80)/80 = (d + 140)/60

Solving the above equations, we get:

d = 240x/7

Substituting the value of d in any of the above equations, we get:

x = 120

Therefore, the value of x is 120 km/hr.

Answer: Option A (120)
