A 600 mm diameter pipe contains a fluid at a pressure of 3 N/mm2. If ...
Solution:

Given data:

Diameter of pipe = 600 mm

Pressure of fluid = 3 N/mm2

Safe stress in tension = 75 N/mm2

Minimum thickness of pipe = ?

We know that the hoop stress in a cylindrical pipe is given by,

Hoop stress (σh) = pd/2t

Where,

p = pressure of fluid

d = diameter of pipe

t = thickness of pipe

The maximum allowable stress (σ) in tension is given by,

σ = 75 N/mm2

From the given data,

p = 3 N/mm2

d = 600 mm

Substituting the values in the formula,

σh = pd/2t

75 = 3 x 600/2t

t = 600 x 3/2 x 75

t = 12 mm

Therefore, the minimum thickness of the pipe is 12 mm.
