Explanation:


The C2-C3 bond lies in the middle of the butane molecule. The dihedral angle is the angle between the plane of the two methyl groups on C1 and C4 and the plane of the two hydrogen atoms on C2 and C3. The potential energy of a molecule varies with the dihedral angle or torsion angle. There are four possible conformers of butane based on the torsion angle: anti, gauche, eclipsed, and totally eclipsed.


Anti-Conformation:


In the anti-conformation, the dihedral angle is 180°, and the two methyl groups are positioned opposite to each other. This conformation is the most stable and has the lowest potential energy.


Gauche-Conformation:


In the gauche-conformation, the dihedral angle is 60°, and the two methyl groups are positioned next to each other. This conformation has a higher potential energy than the anti-conformation but is still more stable than the eclipsed and totally eclipsed conformations.


Eclipsed-Conformation:


In the eclipsed-conformation, the dihedral angle is 0°, and the two methyl groups are positioned directly behind each other. This conformation has a higher potential energy than the anti and gauche conformations because of steric hindrance between the methyl groups.


Totally Eclipsed-Conformation:


In the totally eclipsed-conformation, the dihedral angle is 120°, and the two methyl groups are positioned directly on top of each other. This conformation has the highest potential energy and is the least stable.


Answer:


When viewed about C2-C3 bond, the energy minima on a graph of potential energy versus dihedral angle occur in the Gauche and Anti conformations. Therefore, options B and C are correct.
