A pipe of 25 mm outer diameter carries steam. The heat transfer coefficient between the cylinder and surroundings is 5 W/m2K. It is proposed to reduce the heat loss from the pipe by adding insulation having a thermal conductivity of 0.05 W/mK. Which one of the following statements is TRUE?
[2011]
  • a)
    The outer radius of the pipe is equal to the critical radius.
  • b)
    The outer radius of the pipe is less than the critical radius.
  • c)
    Adding the insulation will reduce the heat loss.
  • d)
    Adding the insulation will increase the heat loss.
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

A pipe of 25 mm outer diameter carries steam. The heat transfer coeffi...
Solution:

Given data:

Outer diameter of the pipe, d = 25 mm = 0.025 m

Heat transfer coefficient, h = 5 W/m²K

Thermal conductivity of insulation, k = 0.05 W/mK

Critical radius is the radius at which the heat loss through the cylinder is minimum. It is given by:

rc = k/h

rc = 0.05/5

rc = 0.01 m

Outer radius of the pipe, ro = d/2 = 0.025/2 = 0.0125 m

As ro < rc,="" the="" outer="" radius="" of="" the="" pipe="" is="" less="" than="" the="" critical="" />

Now, on adding insulation, the heat loss from the pipe can be reduced. This is because the insulation reduces the rate of heat transfer from the surface of the pipe to the surroundings. Hence, adding insulation will reduce the heat loss.

Therefore, option (C) is the correct answer.

Summary:

The outer radius of the pipe is less than the critical radius. Adding insulation will reduce the heat loss.
