Among the following which will cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane (B2H6) - NH3, RNH2, R2NH, R3N, PH3P, R2O, ROH, THF, Pyridine, D-, OH-
Most Upvoted Answer
Among the following which will cause heterolytical cleavage of diboran...
1. NH3
- NH3 can cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane (B2H6).
- The lone pair on nitrogen in NH3 can coordinate with one of the boron atoms in B2H6, resulting in the formation of an ammoniate adduct.
- This adduct can then undergo heterolytical cleavage, breaking the B-B bond in B2H6.

2. RNH2
- RNH2 (primary amines) can also cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane.
- Similar to NH3, the lone pair on nitrogen in RNH2 can coordinate with one of the boron atoms in B2H6, forming an amine adduct.
- The amine adduct can then undergo heterolytical cleavage, resulting in cleavage of the B-B bond.

3. R2NH
- R2NH (secondary amines) can also cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane.
- The lone pair on one of the nitrogen atoms in R2NH can coordinate with one of the boron atoms in B2H6, forming an amine adduct.
- Similar to NH3 and RNH2, the amine adduct can undergo heterolytical cleavage, breaking the B-B bond.

4. R3N
- R3N (tertiary amines) can cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane.
- The lone pair on one of the nitrogen atoms in R3N can coordinate with one of the boron atoms in B2H6, forming an amine adduct.
- The amine adduct can then undergo heterolytical cleavage, resulting in cleavage of the B-B bond.

5. PH3P
- PH3P (phosphine) can cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane.
- The lone pair on phosphorus in PH3P can coordinate with one of the boron atoms in B2H6, forming a phosphine adduct.
- The phosphine adduct can undergo heterolytical cleavage, leading to the cleavage of the B-B bond.

6. R2O
- R2O (ether) cannot cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane.
- Unlike the previous examples, R2O does not have a lone pair of electrons available for coordination with boron atoms in B2H6. Therefore, it cannot facilitate heterolytical cleavage.

7. ROH
- ROH (alcohol) cannot cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane.
- Similar to R2O, ROH does not have a lone pair of electrons available for coordination with boron atoms in B2H6. Therefore, it cannot facilitate heterolytical cleavage.

8. THF
- THF (tetrahydrofuran) cannot cause heterolytical cleavage of diborane.
- THF is an ether and, like R2O, does not have a lone pair of electrons available for coordination with boron atoms in B2H6. Hence, it cannot facilitate heterolytical cleavage.

9. Pyridine
- Pyridine can cause heterolytical cle
