Calculation of Height of Embankment:

Height of embankment can be calculated as:

Height of embankment = RL of centerline of GL - RL of FL



  • Height of embankment at Chainage 0 ft = 21 ft - 18 ft = 3 ft

  • Height of embankment at Chainage 80 ft = 18 ft - 18 ft = 0 ft

  • Height of embankment at Chainage 200 ft = 16 ft - 18 ft = -2 ft (As the value is negative, it means that there is a cutting instead of an embankment at this point)



Calculation of Length of Embankment:

Length of embankment can be calculated as:

Length of embankment = Chainage at which embankment starts - Chainage at which embankment ends



  • Length of embankment = 200 ft - 0 ft = 200 ft



Calculation of Cross-sectional Area:

Cross-sectional area can be calculated as:

Cross-sectional area = Width of embankment x (Height of embankment + (1/2) x Side slope x Width of embankment)



  • Cross-sectional area at Chainage 0 ft = 25 ft x (3 ft + (1/2) x 2.5 x 25 ft) = 1250 ft2

  • Cross-sectional area at Chainage 80 ft = 25 ft x (0 ft + (1/2) x 2.5 x 25 ft) = 625 ft2

  • Cross-sectional area at Chainage 200 ft (cutting) = 25 ft x (2 ft + (1/2) x 2.5 x 25 ft) = 875 ft2



Calculation of Volume of Earthwork:

Volume of earthwork can be calculated by taking the average of the cross-sectional areas at the two end sections and multiplying it with the length of the embankment. The volume of cutting can be calculated by taking the negative value of the volume of earthwork.



  • Volume of earthwork = ((1250 ft2 + 625 ft2) / 2) x 200 ft = 93,750 ft3
