Calculation of Required Length of Weld

Given:

  • Width of steel plate (b) = 10mm

  • Thickness of steel plate (t) = 10mm

  • Permissible shear stress in the weld (τ) = 80N/mm2

Formula:

The shear strength of the weld can be calculated by the formula:

τ = (0.7 x s x l)/w

where,

s = the ultimate shear strength of the weld

l = the length of the weld

w = the width of the weld

Solution:

Let's assume the ultimate shear strength of the weld (s) as 100N/mm2.

Then, we can rearrange the formula to find the required length of the weld:

l = (τ x w)/ (0.7 x s) = (80 x 10)/ (0.7 x 100) = 114.28mm

Conclusion

Therefore, the required length of the weld joining the two steel plates is 114.28mm.
