A train B speeding with 120 kmph crosses another train C, running in the same direction in 2 minutes. If the lengths of the trains B and C be 100 m and 200m respectively, what is the speed of the train C?
  • a)
    111 kmph
  • b)
    127 kmph
  • c)
    123 kmph
  • d)
    29 kmph
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A train B speeding with 120 kmph crosses another train C, running in ...
Let the speed of train C be x kmph.
Speed of B relative to C = (120 - x)
Distance covered = (100 4 200)m = 300 m.
⇒ 5400 = 120(600-5x) ⇒ x = 111.

A train B speeding with 120 kmph crosses another train C, running in ...
Solution:

Given:

Speed of train B (SB) = 120 kmph

Length of train B (LB) = 100 m

Length of train C (LC) = 200 m

Time taken by train B to cross train C (t) = 2 min = 2/60 hours = 1/30 hours

Let the speed of train C be SC kmph

Relative speed of train B w.r.t train C (SR) = SB - SC

Distance covered by train B to cross train C (d) = LB + LC = 100 + 200 = 300 m

Formula used:

Distance = Speed x Time

Calculation:

d = SR x t

300 = (SB - SC) x 1/30

SB - SC = 9000/30 = 300

SC = SB - 300

SC = 120 - 300 = 80 kmph

Therefore, the speed of train C is 80 kmph.

So, option A is the correct answer.
