Enlightenment and Teachings

Lord Mahavira spent the next twelve years practicing intense meditation, self-discipline, and austerities. At the age of 42, he attained enlightenment, known as Kevala Jnana, under a Sal tree in the region of present-day Bihar. He became an omniscient being and gained profound knowledge about the nature of reality, karma, and the path to liberation.

Principles of Jainism

Lord Mahavira's teachings revolved around the principles of non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), chastity (brahmacharya), and non-attachment (aparigraha). He emphasized the importance of leading a life of compassion and respect for all living beings, regardless of their size or form. Lord Mahavira advocated for vegetarianism and believed in the concept of karma, where one's actions determine their future.

Spread of Jainism

Lord Mahavira attracted a large following during his lifetime, including both monks and laypeople. He established a monastic order of Jain monks and nuns, known as Jain Sadhus and Jain Sadhvis. These followers played a crucial role in preserving and spreading his teachings. Jainism gained significant popularity and influence during his time and continued to flourish after his death.

Death and Legacy

Lord Mahavira passed away at the age of 72 in 527 BCE in Pawapuri, Bihar. His death was marked by a grand funeral procession and cremation. His teachings and philosophies, known as Jain Agamas, were orally transmitted by his disciples for several centuries before being compiled into written texts.
