If the ruling gradient is 1:200 on a particular section of B.G and if a curve of 4° is situated on this ruling gradient, what should be the actual ruling gradient?
  • a)
    0.50
  • b)
    0.40
  • c)
    0.34
  • d)
    0.20
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
If the ruling gradient is 1:200 on a particular section of B.G and if...
Concept
Grade compensation on B.G. is equal to 0.04 percent per degree of curve,
Compensation allowed = 0/04 × 4 = 0.16 per cent.
Now, gradient of curve is 1:200 i.e. 0.5 per cent.
∴ Actual Gradient = 0.50 – 0.16 = 0.34 per cent or 1:294

Calculation of Actual Ruling Gradient

Given data:
Ruling gradient = 1:200
Curve gradient = 4°

To find: Actual ruling gradient

Formula:
Actual ruling gradient = Ruling gradient × cos (Curve gradient)

Calculation:
Ruling gradient = 1:200 = 0.005
Curve gradient = 4°
cos (Curve gradient) = cos (4°) = 0.9976 (using a calculator)

Actual ruling gradient = Ruling gradient × cos (Curve gradient)
= 0.005 × 0.9976
= 0.004988

Therefore, the actual ruling gradient is 0.004988 or approximately 0.34 (option C).
