Journey to a picnic spot:
2 friends started for a picnic spot, in two different cars. A drove his car at a constant velocity 60 km/h. B drove his car at a constant velocity 50 km/h. The velocity of B relative to A is VB – VA Similarly, the velocity of object A relative to object B is VA – VB Their friend C was supposed to wait at a point on the road for a lift. Both of them forgot to pick up C. A and B reached the picnic spot within 2 hours and 2 hours 24 minutes respectively.
What were the velocities of A and B relative to C?
  • a)
    50 km/h, 60 km/h
  • b)
    60 km/h, 50 km/h
  • c)
    Both 10 km/h
  • d)
    Both 55 km/h
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Since C was in stationary position, his velocity was 0. Hence the velocity of A relative to C was 6
60 – 0 = 60 km/h and the velocity of B relative to C was 50 – 0 = 50 km/h.

Solution:

Velocity of A = 60 km/h

Velocity of B = 50 km/h

Time taken by A = 2 hours

Time taken by B = 2 hours 24 minutes = 2.4 hours

Let us assume that C was waiting at a point X and the distance between X and the picnic spot is d.

Velocity of A relative to C = VA – VC

As A and B forgot to pick up C, C did not travel with them. So, the time taken by C to reach the picnic spot would be the same as the time taken by A and B together.

Time taken by A and B together = 2 hours + 2.4 hours = 4.4 hours

Distance between X and the picnic spot = d

Velocity of A relative to C = (d/4.4) km/h

Velocity of B relative to C = VB – VC

Distance between X and the picnic spot = d

Time taken by B to cover this distance = 2.4 hours

Velocity of B relative to C = (d/2.4) km/h

As both A and B were travelling in the same direction, the relative velocity of B with respect to A would be:

VB – VA = 50 – 60 = -10 km/h

This means that B was travelling 10 km/h slower than A.

Velocity of A relative to C = (d/4.4) km/h

Velocity of B relative to C = (d/2.4) km/h

We need to find the values of VA – VC and VB – VC.

We can use the concept of relative velocity to find VA – VC and VB – VC.

Relative velocity between A and C = VA – VC

Relative velocity between B and C = VB – VC

Relative velocity between A and B = VB – VA = -10 km/h

We know that relative velocity between two objects is equal to the difference in their velocities when they are travelling in the same direction.

Relative velocity between A and C = VA – VC

VA – VC = (d/4.4) km/h ……….. (1)

Relative velocity between B and C = VB – VC

VB – VC = (d/2.4) km/h ……….. (2)

We need to solve these two equations to find VA – VC and VB – VC.

Multiplying equation (1) by 2.4 and equation (2) by 4.4, we get:

2.4(VA – VC) = d

4.4(VB – VC) = d

Solving for VA – VC and VB – VC, we get:

VA – VC = (d/2.4) km/h

VB – VC = (d/4.4) km/h

Substituting the values of VA – VC and VB – VC, we get:

VA – VC = 60 – (d/2.4) km/h

VB – VC = 50 – (d/4.4) km/h

Therefore, the velocities of A and B relative to C are 60 – (d/2.4) km/h and 50 – (d/4.4) km/h respectively.

Hence, the correct answer is option B, i.e., 60 km/h and 50 km/h.
