Directions : Each of these questions contain two statements, Assertion and Reason. Each of these questions also has four alternative choices, only one of which is the correct answer. You have to select one of the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) given below.

Assertion : A body cannot have acceleration if its velocity is zero at a given instant of time.

Reason : A body is momentarily at rest when it reverses the direction.

  • a)
Assertion is correct, reason is incorrect

  • b)
Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is not a correct explanation for assertion

  • c)
Assertion is correct, reason is correct; reason is a correct explanation for assertion.

  • d)
Assertion is incorrect, reason is correct.

Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Directions : Each of these questions contain two statements, Assertion...
Velocity of a body and acceleration are in opposite direction, then surely acceleration acting in the opposite direction will slow down the velocity of the body. Ultimately, the body will momentarily come to rest before reversing its direction but at this instant of time only velocity will be zero and acceleration will still be acting on the body. Hence, the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

Assertion and Reasoning

• Assertion: A body is momentarily at rest when it reverses the direction.
• Reason: A body cannot have acceleration if its velocity is zero at a given instant of time.

Explanation:

• The assertion is correct because when a body changes its direction, it has to stop at that instant, and at that instant, it is momentarily at rest.
• The reason given is incorrect because a body can have acceleration even if its velocity is zero at a given instant of time. For example, when a body is thrown upward, it reaches its maximum height, and at that point, its velocity becomes zero. But the body still has acceleration because the force of gravity is acting on it, and it is moving in the upward direction.

Conclusion:

• Therefore, option (c) is the correct answer as the assertion is correct, but the reason given is incorrect.
