Directions : In the following questions, A statement of Assertion (A) is followed by a statement of Reason (R). Mark the correct choice as.
Assertion (A): Principal value of sin-1(1/√2) is π/4
Reason (R): Principal value of cot-1(-1/√3) is π/3
  • a)
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
  • b)
Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
  • c)
A is true but R is false
  • d)
A is false and R is True
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Directions : In the following questions, A statement of Assertion (A)...
Sin-1(1/√2) = sin-1(sin (π/4))
= π/4
cot-1((-1/√3) = y
Cot y = -1/√3
= -cot(π/3)
= -cot (π - (π/3)
= cot(2π/3)
⇒ cot-1(-1/√3) = 2π/3
Hence Assertion is correct and Reason is incorrect.

Directions : In the following questions, A statement of Assertion (A)...
Explanation:
Assertion (A) says that the principal value of sin-1(1/√2) is π/4 which is true. The principal value of sin-1(x) lies between -π/2 to π/2 and sin(π/4) = 1/√2. Hence, sin-1(1/√2) = π/4.

Reason (R) says that the principal value of cot-1(-1/√3) is π/3 which is also true. The principal value of cot-1(x) lies between 0 to π and cot(π/3) = -1/√3. Hence, cot-1(-1/√3) = π/3.

However, R is not the correct explanation of A as the two statements are independent and do not have a cause-effect relationship.

Option (C) A is true but R is false is the correct answer.
