    Dalton’s atomic theory
  • d)
    Avogadro’s Law
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
Direction: Two class students of class 9th, Aashi and Sheena, were as...

Law of Conservation of Mass:
The law of conservation of mass states that mass can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. In other words, the total mass of the reactants must be equal to the total mass of the products.

Explanation:
In the given scenario, Aashi and Sheena were asked to react sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and sodium ethanoate (CH3COONa). The masses of the reactants and products were measured.

Aashi followed the instructions and measured the exact amounts of sodium carbonate and ethanoic acid as 5.3 g and 6 g respectively. As a result, she obtained 2.2 g of carbon dioxide, 0.9 g of water, and 8.2 g of sodium ethanoate.

On the other hand, Sheena did not measure the amounts of the chemicals and simply took them without any measurement. Despite this, the masses of the products formed (2.2 g of carbon dioxide, 0.9 g of water, and 8.2 g of sodium ethanoate) were the same as those obtained by Aashi.

This observation demonstrates the law of conservation of mass. According to this law, the total mass of the reactants (sodium carbonate and ethanoic acid) must be equal to the total mass of the products (carbon dioxide, water, and sodium ethanoate) in a chemical reaction. In this case, the total mass of the reactants (5.3 g + 6 g = 11.3 g) is equal to the total mass of the products (2.2 g + 0.9 g + 8.2 g = 11.3 g).

Therefore, the agreement between the measured masses of the reactants and products, despite the lack of measurement by Sheena, supports the law of conservation of mass.
