1. Light Absorption
- Chlorophyll, the primary pigment involved in photosynthesis, absorbs light energy from the visible spectrum, particularly in the red and blue regions.
- Other pigments, such as carotenoids, play a role in capturing light energy from different wavelengths and protecting chlorophyll from excessive light.

2. Electron Transport Chain
- As light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll, it excites electrons, initiating a series of redox reactions.
- These reactions occur within protein complexes embedded in the thylakoid membrane, collectively known as the electron transport chain.
- The excited electrons are passed along the chain, releasing energy in the process.

3. ATP Synthesis
- The energy released during electron transport is utilized to pump protons (H+) across the thylakoid membrane, creating a concentration gradient.
- The protons flow back through ATP synthase, a protein complex, driving the synthesis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a molecule that stores chemical energy.

Light-Independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle)
The light-independent reactions occur in the stroma of the chloroplasts and do not directly require light. They utilize the ATP and NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) generated during the light-dependent reactions.

1. Carbon Fixation
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere enters the stroma and combines with a five-carbon sugar called ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) with the help of the enzyme Rubisco.
- This process, known as carbon fixation, produces an unstable six-carbon compound that immediately breaks down into two molecules of a three-carbon compound called 3-phosphoglycerate (PGA).

2. Reduction and Regeneration
- ATP and NADPH generated in the light-dependent reactions are used to convert PGA into glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P), a three-carbon sugar.
- Some of the G3P molecules are utilized to regenerate RuBP, while others are used to produce glucose and other organic compounds.
